XIII. Advances in research of the flora and vegetation in the Carpathian Basin
Dear colleagues,
On behalf of the
Centre for Ecological Research, the Department of Botany at University of
Debrecen, the MTA Debrecen Regional Botanical Working Committee, and the
Hortobágy Nature Conservational Association, we cordially invite every
inquiring to the international conference entitled
XIII. Advances in research of the flora and
vegetation in the Carpathian Basin,
which will be held between the 11th and 14th of
November 2021 in the headquarter of MTA-TABT (4032 Debrecen, Thomas Mann
str. 49., 47.5495°, 21.6152°).
The conference
entitled "Advances in research of
the flora and vegetation in the Carpathian Basin " started from
Debrecen in November 1997. This conference has been held 12 times since then,
and it has become the largest event of thy Hungarian botanist in the last 22
years, while it also has outgrown itself to an international conference.
The purpose of the conference
The event will
continue to provide an opportunity for participants to get a comprehensive
overview of the latest results of flora and vegetation research in the
Carpathian Basin. While preserving the traditions of previous conferences, we
would like to promote the presentation and discussion of the recent floristic,
coenological, taxonomic, scientific and landscape historical researches, as
well as their ecological and nature conservation aspects.
The event would
like to offer a special opportunity to young researchers of universities and
research institutes to present their results to the general public. To this
end, the programme is customized as a young-oriented event.
Topics of the conference
There will be no
parallel sessions at the conference. Sections which will feature oral
presentations and posters are:
1. FLORA MAPPING
AND TAXONOMY (Plenary speaker: Zdenek
Kaplan, Institute of Botany, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic,
Průhonice, CZ).
2. PLANT
COMMUNITIES AND VEGETATION SCIENCE (Plenary speaker: Milan Chytrý, Masaryk University, Brno,
CZ).
3. TRADITIONAL
ECOLOGICAL KNOWLEDGE AND ETHNOBOTANY (Plenary speaker: Lukasz Luczaj, Department
of Botany, Faculty of Biotechnology, University of Rzeszów, Rzeszów, PL).
4. PLANT ECOLOGY
AND PLANT INVASIONS (Plenary speaker:
Róbert Pál, Montana Tech of the University of Montana, Butte, USA).
Each section will
be opened with the presentation of an invited plenary speaker. After the

professional relationships between participants, including discussion evening,
photo competition, best poster competition, botanical exhibition, evening and
daytime social programs. Ádám Boros 2020 awards will also be handed over at the
conference.
Presentations at the conference
The conference is
expected to accept a total of 35 oral presentations. On the basis of the
received abstracts, the organizing committee will invite the speakers and order

references.
Roundtable discussion
As in the past, we
will organize a thematic workshop at this event. The topic of the discussion
will be ‘Our

this title will be held and presented in the form of a presentation to the
interested parties. This will be followed by a wider roundtable discussion on
the topic, where every participant can share their views and ideas.
Workshop
How to measure
the success of restoration? - For nature conservation practitioners and anyone
interested
The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA)
proclaimed 2021–2030 as the Decade on Ecosystem Restoration that aims to
prevent, halt and reverse the degradation of ecosystems on every continent and
in every ocean. However, the short- and long-term success of restoration
interventions need also to be considered. Unfortunately, both the monitoring,
the assessment and the publication of the results has shortcomings in the
restoration practice. This is an international challenge due to financial and
planning issues. Thus it is a challenge to identify which indicators are
relevant for nature conservation throughout Hungary.
There are three main basic groups of indicators in
the international literature measuring the success of restoration: biodiversity
or composition, structural characteristics of the vegetation, and
characteristics of the ecological functioning. The Society for Ecological
Restoration adds to these the need of comparison with a reference ecosystems
using the above indicators. They also stress the indicator function of
indigenous plants, the sustainability and resilience of the restored state, and
that the ecosystem is appropriately integrated into its larger landscape.
The current workshop will focus on the aspects that
motivate practitioners in Hungary in assessing restoration success. We aim at
identifying success indicators which will assist both research and actual
restoration practices by integrating the above aspects of success
characterisation. We hope that the workshop will help to make the choice of
success indicators more conscious and draw attention to the importance of
identifying these already at the planning phase. At the same time, the
conclusions from the workshop will help researchers to understand the
motivation of practitioners in detail. Relying on the consensus reached at the
workshop, in collaboration with the participants, we plan to synthetise the
knowledge on success indicators used in case studies and field surveys.
