On behalf of the Centre for Ecological Research, the Department of Botany at University of Debrecen, the MTA Debrecen Regional Botanical Working Committee, and the Hortobágy Nature Conservational Association, we cordially invite every inquiring to the international conference entitled
XIII. Advances in research of the flora and vegetation in the Carpathian Basin,
which will be held between the 12th and 15th of November 2020 in the headquarter of MTA-TABT (4032 Debrecen, Thomas Mann str. 49., 47.5495°, 21.6152°).
The conference entitled "Advances in research of the flora and vegetation in the Carpathian Basin " started from Debrecen in November 1997. This conference has been held 12 times since then, and it has become the largest event of thy Hungarian botanist in the last 22 years, while it also has outgrown itself to an international conference.
The purpose of the conference
The event will continue to provide an opportunity for participants to get a comprehensive overview of the latest results of flora and vegetation research in the Carpathian Basin. While preserving the traditions of previous conferences, we would like to promote the presentation and discussion of the recent floristic, coenological, taxonomic, scientific and landscape historical researches, as well as their ecological and nature conservation aspects.
The event would like to offer a special opportunity to young researchers of universities and research institutes to present their results to the general public. To this end, the programme is customized as a young-oriented event.
Topics of the conference
There will be no parallel sessions at the conference. Sections which will feature oral presentations and posters are:
1. FLORA MAPPING AND TAXONOMY (Plenary speaker: Zdenek Kaplan, Institute of Botany, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, Průhonice, CZ).
2. PLANT COMMUNITIES AND VEGETATION SCIENCE (Plenary speaker: Milan Chytrý, Masaryk University, Brno, CZ).
3. TRADITIONAL ECOLOGICAL KNOWLEDGE AND ETHNOBOTANY (Plenary speaker: Lukasz Luczaj, Department of Botany, Faculty of Biotechnology, University of Rzeszów, Rzeszów, PL).
4. PLANT ECOLOGY AND PLANT INVASIONS (Plenary speaker: Róbert Pál, Montana Tech of the University of Montana, Butte, USA).
Each section will be opened with the presentation of an invited plenary speaker. After the plenary speaking, standard lectures will follow, while the sections will be closed with short and poster presentations.
Language of the conference
Lectures and posters can be presented in Hungarian and English language at the conference. Please note that captures of the presentations need to written in English, while the language of the presentation either can be Hungarian or English.
The venue of the conference
The event will be held at the headquarters of the MTA-TABT (Debrecen Regional Committee of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences; 4032 Debrecen, Thomas Mann str. 49, 47.5495 °, 21.6152 °). A limited number of free parking spaces are available on site. For those arriving by train, the easiest way to get there is tram line Nr 2 from the Debrecen train station, which stops at the conference venue.
Programs of the conference
In addition to the lecture and poster sections, the event will also help to develop and deepen professional relationships between participants, including discussion evening, photo competition, best poster competition, botanical exhibition, evening and daytime social programs. Ádám Boros 2020 awards will also be handed over at the conference.
Presentations at the conference
The conference is expected to accept a total of 35 oral presentations. On the basis of the received abstracts, the organizing committee will invite the speakers and order them in sections. The organizers reserve the right to transfer lectures from the oral presentation to the poster section.
Standard oral presentations last 15 minutes (+5 minutes of discussion). In addition to the standard presentations, we would like to give you the opportunity to give short talks (5 minutes with discussion) and poster presentations. You can apply for oral presentations by September 15, 2020, with a 1000-1500-character summary in English or Hungarian. The summary should not include figures, tables, and references.
Roundtable discussion
As in the past, we will organize a thematic workshop at this event. The topic of the discussion will be ‘Our Eurasian view of the Pannonian vegetation’. The private workshop at this title will be held and presented in the form of a presentation to the interested parties. This will be followed by a wider roundtable discussion on the topic, where every participant can share their views and ideas.
Participation fees
Participation fees include attendance at conference events, lectures and / or poster presentations, attendance at the Saturday dinner, continuous availability of conference buffet and free WiFi, the e-conference flash drive including summaries of lectures, posters, and the program, participation in a botanical quiz, and also free admission to the Botanical Garden of the University of Debrecen throughout the conference.

Participation grant for young researchers
Organizers are offering participation grant for two young researchers (aged under 30) to attend in the “13th Advances in research of the flora and vegetation in the Carpathian Basin” conference in Debrecen. These grants can cover the participation fee of the Conference. Grant holders have to give a privileged oral presentation in an appropriate section. You can apply for the grant by submitting an article about your presentation to the Journal of Kitaibelia until June 15 2020.
